Bullying program to be given at Fred Assam Elementary on Thursday, November 15

 

On Thursday, November 15, Fred Assam Elementary will be hosting a program presented on bullying.

 

Based on the Olweus program, presented by Terry Stulken from Colman-Egan and Byron Utter from the Mobridge School systems, will give their presentation in which they share an educational program targeting a wide group of individuals. Included are students, teachers and staff operating within the school environment, and parents and the greater community, operating outside the school environment.

 

According to information received prior by the presenters, the program provides training to school staff, educates students regarding bullying and its dangers, and addresses the community to raise awareness of bullying and gain support for anti-bullying policies.

 

They said, “It is important to educate and engage all of the groups involved with bullying activities, including bullies, victims, peer onlookers, and adults.”

 

Presenters discuss the verbal and nonverbal, direct, indirect, physical and emotional expressions of bullying the legal ramifications of these behaviors, and technological (cyberbullying) and other vehicles for these behaviors.

 

The presenters will be throughout the district during the day, meeting with the middle school at 8:10 and then moving to Brandon Elementary 9:20; Robert Bennis 10:35; Valley Springs 12:30; and Fred Assam Elementary at 2:00.  The presenters will meet with FAE staff after school. The parent assembly is a 90 minute presentation and will begin at 6:30pm at Fred Assam Elementary
